Vaccines are the second most effective public health intervention after clean water. Vaccination is needed to protect against infectious diseases/viruses that you may be exposed to. Vaccinations either contain a weakened or dead form of a disease in a harmless form, so your body’s immune system can create the antibodies against the disease. This means if you do come into contact with the real and live form of the disease/virus then your body will know how to fight it and keep you safe and healthy.
As part of the NHS immunisation schedule, you will be offered free vaccinations throughout your childhood to protect you against identified infectious diseases. If you chose to travel abroad to certain areas, you may require additional vaccinations to protect you from diseases not common within the UK. If you chose to pursue certain careers then you will again be offered further vaccinations for your protection.
